Awesome! Keep us updated 🙂 It’s great to learn from each other about this stuff, especially keeping note on what works and what doesn’t for you and for your audience 🙂

Ok, that makes sense. We have a pretty niche topic, we review family friendly audio drama series. Our downloads are a few thousand per episode on average so I think I’m going to move forward with the premium model in the next few months and see what happens. Thanks guys!

Hey hey JD! Great question. I’m going to paste Rob’s answer to you….

“I would say that question is a “It depends” type question.

If you are doing a podcast on very specific niche – you would have a lower number of listeners to make sense.

So a show on competitive Tree climbing – might only need 100 listeners to make sense.

Where as a show about a very generic subject – Say a general comedy podcast – it might not make sense until you get above the 1,000 listener mark and really not generate revenue until the 10k mark.

The broader the subject and the more podcasts about that subject – the larger your audience should be. The more niche your subject on something you might be the only podcaster covering – the smaller your audience would need to be.”

I agree with him as well. When you have a broader type of content it’s very challenging to pin point what would make them step into a membership type scenario with you. Think about the type of content that makes it onto TV shows like Today, or Good Morning America…they have to appeal to a broad range of people, whereas talk type shows that air on PBS can delved deeper into politics, society and culture simply because they’re audience is slightly more “niche” 🙂

Does that make sense!

It answered a lot of questions that I’ve been pondering about how I might implement premium content into one of my shows.

I do still have one question: What would you consider the baseline download number needed to successfully launch a premium model?
